Four words on the wall. Sprayed in pink. Building a sentence. Bring me the horizon. What is the meaning? Who sprayed this? What motivated him/her to put this message to the public. Is it a message? Bring me the horizon. Or a demand?
The horizon in Ladakh usually lies behind the mountains. Did the person have a look behind the mountains? What did he/she see there? Or is it just an imagination of what might lie behind? A life more comfortable and not enclosed by boundaries, high as mountains? Is this person not happy with the limits of life in Ladakh nowadays? Being entrapped by the snow on the high passes in winter and not everyone can afford to take a flight out of the cold freezer Ladakh. Feeling imprisoned in the rules and regulations of a society with a rich cultural heritage, which were needed to survive in the harsh conditions, nature of high altitude desert provides for its inhabitants.
Or is this person just curious where the horizon of Ladakh is? Where can development and changes lead to? Where are the actual borders of modernisation? The last decades made it obvious, that influences from outside had an immense impact on the lifestyle of the Ladakhis. Where are the limits? Where is the horizon?
These words on the wall started working on my mind. This essay is the result. Bring me the horizon.
